<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />Head to San Francisco’s Sunset District where you’ll find an eye-catching staircase known as the <a href="http://www.16thavenuetiledsteps.com/" target="_blank">16th Avenue Tiled Steps Project</a>. Situated in a quiet residential neighborhood about 15 minutes from Golden Gate Park, the stairway is decorated with 163 separate mosaic panels, one for each riser. Over 2,000 handmade tiles and 75,000 fragments of tile, stained glass and mirror were used on the project. Look closely, and you’ll notice a sea-to-sky theme, with fish and sea shells near the base of the steps and birds, leaves and stars rising to the top. </div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
The mosaic stairway was conceived in 2003 and the project was completed two years later. More than 300 neighborhood residents participated in the creation of the panels and over 220 community members sponsored the handmade tiles imbedded in the colorful mosaic. With a sharp eye, you’ll see the names of the sponsors interlaced into the design.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Once you’ve admired the artistic steps from afar, go ahead and climb them to the top, pausing occasionally to gaze at the magnificent Pacific Ocean view behind you. Want more views? For a spectacular 360-degree panorama of San Francisco and beyond, continue on to Grandview Park. To reach the park from the top of the mosaic steps, take the stairs on your right leading to the upper level of 15th Avenue. From here, continue on the old wooden steps on your right to Grandview Park. Tip: Wear comfy walking shoes (many, many stairs!) and a sweater or jacket for the breeze that welcomes you at the top of the park. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
BE SMART: Prowlers know that tourists frequent this neighborhood and car break-ins can occur, even in daylight. Don’t tempt them! Remove valuables and belongings from your car and lock your car doors before exploring the mosaic steps. Also, pay notice to the parking and street cleaning signs to avoid being ticketed or towed. </div>

Tail-wagging news! Petco Park, home of the <a href="http://www.padres.com/" target="_blank">San Diego Padres</a>, becomes the first Major League Baseball venue to have a dedicated dog-friendly viewing area at every home game. Aptly called <a href="http://www.padres.com/barkyard" target="_blank">The Barkyard</a>, the area allows fans and their four-legged friends to watch baseball together all season long. It consists of six sets of premium box seats in left-center field (previously occupied by a row of the Picnic Terrace group space). Each box accommodates up to four people and two dogs. Ticket prices vary by game, but start at $100 for each box and include four tickets.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Walk down Main Street in Old Town Newhall in Santa Clarita and you’ll be reminded of legends of the Old West. Embedded in the pavement of the sidewalks are plaques honoring members of the entertainment industry – specifically those in Western film, TV and radio. Known as the <a href="http://walkofwesternstars.com/" target="_blank">Walk of Western Stars</a>, this stretch of sidewalk is a fitting testament to Santa Clarita’s deep-rooted Western heritage. </div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Santa Clarita has always had a love affair with the Hollywood Western movie. The wide open space, the diverse landscape, and close proximity to Los Angeles have attracted movie directors to the area for more than a hundred years. Singing cowboy Gene Autry and legendary actors Gary Cooper, John Wayne and Roy Rogers are among those that have filmed Old West movies here and have all been inducted into the Walk of Western Stars. Other notable inductees include Tex Ritter, Chuck Connors, and Dale Evans. The most recent honorees are Charles Bronson and Steve McQueen, whose plaques were revealed earlier this year at the annual <a href="http://cowboyfestival.org/" target="_blank">Santa Clarita Cowboy Festival</a>.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Besides being a hub for movies, a variety of western-themed television shows have filmed in Santa Clarita, including Gunsmoke, Annie Oakley and The Wild, Wild West. Today, several movie ranches call Santa Clarita home and filming has extended past the Western genre to include movies such as action-packed Spider-Man and Fast & Furious as well as television shows such as NCIS.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
As you browse the sidewalk tributes, consider a stop at the <a href="http://www.hartmuseum.org/" target="_blank">William S. Hart Museum and Park</a> on Newhall Avenue. Once the former home of William Surrey Hart, a silent screen actor who became one the first big stars of Western movies, it houses a collection of significant Western artwork, early Hollywood mementos, and furnishings and artifacts representing multiple Native American cultures. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Santa Clarita’s <a href="http://walkofwesternstars.com/" target="_blank">Walk of Western Stars</a> is less than 60 minutes from most areas of Los Angeles. It can be accessed via Interstate 5 at Lyons Avenue or off Highway 14 at Newhall Avenue. </div>

Hello Kitty, the adorable feline first introduced to the world in 1974, turns 40 this year. Its maker, Sanrio, is planning a major celebration to mark the occasion. It’s the first ever Hello Kitty Convention, aptly named <a href="http://www.sanrio.com/hellokittycon/" target="_blank">Hello Kitty Con</a>. It will be held in Los Angeles October 30 – November 2, 2014 and will include classes and workshops, lectures and panel discussions, and additional Hello Kitty themed activities. Vintage Hello Kitty products will be on display and shoppers will be able to purchase one-of-a-kind items exclusive to the convention. Fans will be able to meet and snap photos with Hello Kitty and enjoy refreshments from some of the trendiest food trucks in Los Angeles. Seems like a <em>purrfect</em> way to spend the day. </div>

<em><span style="font-size: x-small;">Coastal Living Showhouse 2014 in Coronado (Rendering by Dorian Lytle)</span></em></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Just across the bridge from San Diego is the quaint island community of Coronado. Its pristine, white sand beaches have been voted the best in America and its tree-lined neighborhoods whisper of utopia. It’s no surprise, then, that Coastal Living Magazine has chosen Coronado to be the site of its 2014 Showhouse, a coastal home intended to spotlight the best in construction, design and décor.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Situated on Coronado’s Sunset Park, the 4,500 square-foot home features five bedrooms and has stunning views of the Pacific Ocean. The home was designed and built by Coronado-based Flagg Coastal Homes. The interior design was handled by Burnham Design of Los Angeles and the landscape architect is San Diego-based Topia Land. Two items worth noting: Of the nearly 30 previous homes Coastal Living has selected to showcase, this is the very first one on the West Coast. Additionally, whereas developers typically sell the showhouse after it’s been on display, this house will not go on the market. Instead, its owners, who’ve participated in design decisions, will take up residence in the multi-million dollar home. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This beautiful showhouse will be featured in the October issue of <a href="http://www.coastalliving.com/" target="_blank">Coastal Living Magazine</a>. The public is invited to tour the home starting July 16, 2014. A portion of the proceeds from ticket sales will benefit the Navy SEAL Foundation (the Navy SEALS are based in Coronado). </div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
If you’ve driven between Los Angeles and Las Vegas, undoubtedly you’ve spotted the enormous thermometer rising above a cluster of gas stations and fast-food outlets in the middle of the Mojave Desert. The iconic structure located in Baker, is, in fact, the World’s Tallest Thermometer. It’s been non-operational for a few years, but that all changes today. The thermometer will once again illuminate the triple-digit temperatures of summer, much to the delight of inquisitive travelers! </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The 134-foot tall thermometer was the brainchild of Willis Heron, a local businessman. He wanted to commemorate a heat record set on July 10, 1913 when the temperature soared to 134 degrees in Death Valley. So in 1991, the 13-story structure was built, capable of displaying a maximum temperature of 134 degrees Fahrenheit, the same as the record. It was an instant tourist attraction for obvious reasons. Over the years the tower changed ownership, fell into disrepair and in 2012 the lights of the thermometer were permanently darkened due to high electric bills. In March 2014, members of the Heron family regained ownership of the structure and have been working feverously to restore it at to a tune of about $150,000. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The lights of the giant thermometer will be turned on this afternoon to celebrate the 101st anniversary of the hottest day on earth; however, an official “grand opening” is set later this year in October. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>

<span style="font-size: x-small;"><em>El Capitan in Yosemite National Park</em></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
One hundred and fifty years ago, President Abraham Lincoln recognized the beauty of the Yosemite Valley and vowed to keep it in its natural state, free from development. He signed the Yosemite Land Grant, ensuring that 39,000 acres of the Yosemite Valley and nearby Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias would be set aside for “public use, resort and recreation.” That act is believed to have given birth to the idea of the national park system.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />To commemorate this milestone in the park’s history, Yosemite National Park is hosting the <a href="http://www.rolff.org/" target="_blank">Range of Light Film Festival</a>, a “mid-winter celebration of film, music, storytelling, conservation, art and adventure.” It takes place February 27 to March 2, 2014 at the Yosemite Valley Visitor Center’s theater and auditorium. The theme of the event is "150 Years of Yosemite."</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />More than a dozen films, ranging from shorts to feature-length movies, will be screened, including “El Capitan,’” a digitally remastered, award-winning film from 1968 that’s recognized as one of the best climbing films of its kind. Also of note is a new documentary directed and narrated by Ken Burns called “Yosemite: A Gathering of Spirit,” about the Yosemite Land Grant signed by Lincoln. In addition to the screenings, there will also be artist and filmmaker panels, and live musical performances. </div>

Are you in a party mood, but tired of the same hum-drum get-togethers? You may want to check out the <a href="http://edwardianball.com/tickets/" target="_blank">Edwardian Ball & World’s Faire</a>, an eclectic event that’s anything but mundane. This annual bash celebrates the life and works of writer Edward Gorey, known for his illustrated books, but that’s only the beginning. The party is a mish-mash of music, dance, theater, art, fashion, gaming, and circus, where party-goers are encouraged to dress in costume – and that they do! It’s kind of like Dickens meets Goth meets Roaring 20’s, with a little top-hat and lace thrown in for elegance. </div>

Spend a day on a Southern California beach ice skating – yes, ice skating! The historic <a href="http://www.hoteldel.com/" target="_blank">Hotel del Coronado</a> has transformed its expansive Windsor Lawn into an oceanfront ice rink for the holidays. You can skate under the warm San Diego sun with a view of the Pacific Ocean and later enjoy holiday music and a warm drink while viewing a crimson sunset. You’d be hard pressed to find a more stunning location for this outdoor skate zone, so grab your blades and join in on the fun. <div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The holiday season is in full swing. How do we know? Because of the dozens of Christmas boat parades taking place this month. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Lavishly decorated and brightly lit vessels will navigate California waterways like proud peacocks, each with its own festive style. Whether it’s the multi-million dollar yachts of Newport Beach or the modest skiffs of Mission Bay, one thing is for sure – the boats will be decked out to the nines in lively, seasonal splendor. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The lighted boat parades start their procession in early December. Here's a list of holiday boat parades (and start times) for the remainder of the month. Some parades run on multiple nights and all are free to view. Click on the individual links for more information.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
The Oscars aren’t until next March, but now is the time to win coveted tickets to the red carpet and a chance to see A-list celebrities on Hollywood’s most glamorous night. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Monday, December 2 starts Academy Fan Appreciation Week, and the folks behind the golden statuette are using social media to find Oscar’s biggest fans. Unlike years past where red carpet tickets were obtained by lottery, this time around a pair of tickets will be offered to fans who actively engage with the Academy by tweeting, commenting and sharing their posts. It’s a way to reward their most active and devoted followers. Newer fans will have fun ways to win, too. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
To get in on the action, connect with the <a href="http://www.oscars.org/index.html" target="_blank">Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences</a> via any of their social platforms: <a href="https://www.facebook.com/TheAcademy" target="_blank">Facebook</a>, <a href="https://twitter.com/theacademy" target="_blank">Twitter</a>, <a href="http://instagram.com/theacademy#" target="_blank">Instagram</a>, <a href="http://www.youtube.com/oscars" target="_blank">YouTube</a>, <a href="https://plus.google.com/+Oscars/posts" target="_blank">Google+,</a> and <a href="http://theacademy.tumblr.com/" target="_blank">Tumblr</a>. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The 2014 Oscars will be presented on March 2, 2014 at the Dolby Theater at Hollywood & Highland Center in Hollywood. It will be televised live in more than 225 countries around the world. Will we see you there?</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Today is the day! It’s the start of the five-week long <a href="http://www.riversideca.gov/fol/switch-on-ceremony.asp" target="_blank">Festival of Lights</a> in Riverside. And what a spectacle it is! With the flip of a switch, downtown Riverside will be illuminated by the glow of nearly 4 million holiday bulbs and electrified by the burst of fireworks. The lights, accompanied by dazzling holiday decorations and animatronic displays, can be found along Mission Inn Avenue as well as at the historic <a href="http://www.missioninn.com/festival-of-lights/" target="_blank">Mission Inn Hotel & Spa</a> and numerous other buildings. A tradition for 21 years, the Festival also features an outdoor skating rink, horse-drawn carriage rides, holiday vendors, live entertainment, carolers, and delectable food. Of course, Santa Claus will be there too. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The festivities get started today at noon, with the official lighting ceremony commencing at 4:30pm. This is an extremely popular event, drawing over 250,000 visitors over the multi-week run. If attending <a href="http://www.riversideca.gov/fol/pdf/2013/follightingceremonymapfinal.pdf" target="_blank">opening day</a>, plan to arrive early – it’s estimated over 60,000 folks will be there and downtown streets surrounding the event start closing to motor vehicles around noon. </div>
