Gilroy: Garlic Festival – Scents-ible Noshing

What’s the big stink? Ask a garlic lover. They’ll tell you to follow your nose to the 32nd annual Gilroy Garlic Festival happening July 23-25, 2010. The 3-day event is a salute to the edible bulb and the infinite ways in can be prepared. Whether it’s sliced, diced, crushed, pressed, pickled or sautéed, garlic will dictate the menu in this Ultimate Summer Food Fair. Over 60 vendors will offer garlic-based specialties such as shrimp scampi, stuffed mushrooms and pasta con pesto. Loyal garlic followers will want to sample the garlic ice cream and savory garlic flavored popcorn. In addition, there will be live entertainment, arts & crafts exhibits, food demonstrations and children’s activities.

Fabio Viviani of Bravo TV's "Top Chef" series

On July 24, Tuscan-born Fabio Viviani of Bravo TV’s “Top Chef” fame will conduct a cooking demonstration and will host the Gilroy Festival Garlic Showdown on July 25. In the showdown, four prominent Bay Area chefs will be given a secret ingredient and will have two hours to prepare, plate and serve the meals to judges. My instinct tells me garlic will be involved.

Gilroy, the “Garlic Capitol of the World”, is located 30 miles south of San Jose off of Hwy 101.
